My husband used to constantly ask me questions while we were watching TV. Sometimes he would get frustrated when I didn’t answer him. One day, we were watching TV and he was talking at me about something. He paused the TV and said “Do you hear me?” and I said “No, I don’t. When I’m focused on something, I don’t notice the other sounds in the room. Your voice blends in with the fan and the construction outside and the dryer. My brain filters out the background noise. If you want me to hear you, you have to pause the TV. I can’t hear two things at once.”
After that day, he understood a lot better. Now, if he has something he needs to ask me, he pauses the TV.
