Sex, race, ADHD, and prior concussions as predictors of concussion recovery in adolescents

Objective: Concussions in adolescents are a growing public health concern as the popularity of high school sports increases. The aim of this study was to identify clinical (e.g., prior concussion, migraine history, learning disabilities/attention de…

CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic hypothermia is effective in reducing the sequelae and mortality of neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. Nursing care is essential throughout the treatment, in the early detection of complications in the infant and psychological support for parents. It is essential for nurses to receive training in this care.

In conclusion, our study demonstrated that Nrf2 deficiency promoted the increasing trend of autophagy during aging in skeletal muscle. Nrf2 deficiency and increasing age may cause excessive autophagy in skeletal muscle, which can be a potential mechanism for the development of sarcopenia.

Since the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), efforts have been made to increase access to public services, businesses, education, and public spaces for all members of the community. However, digital accessibility to information online is regularly an afterthought or applied retroactively, rather than a standard consideration integrated into the creation, instruction, and dissemination of information resources. Libraries can serve as advocates for increasing digital accessibility to information resources. This column will investigate what technologies are curre…

CONTEXT: In the absence of baseline testing, normative data may be used to interpret postconcussion scores on the clinical reaction-time test (RTclin). However, to provide normative data, we must understand the performance factors associated with baseline testing.
OBJECTIVE: To explore performance factors associated with baseline RTclin from among candidate variables representing demographics, medical and concussion history, self-reported symptoms, sleep, and sport-related features.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Clinical setting (eg, athletic training room).

Memory is an important part of what distinguishes higher order species from others. Memory also is part of one’s self-identity. Difficulties in short-term memory can make common, everyday tasks difficult for the person experiencing the problem particularly if it recently occurred and the person’s long-term memory is intact. Difficulties with long-term memory can also have problems when language, events or even one’s own identity are affected. For some people the memory loss is temporary but for others, memory impairments are permanent and must be accepted and accommodated as part of the overall…

This study examined comorbidities and baseline test results in athletes with self-reported migraine histories. Background:Athletes with migraines might be at greater risk for sustaining concussions, having post-traumatic migraines, and experiencing prolonged recovery from sport-related concussion. However, little is known about baseline performance in athletes with migraines.Design/Methods:Participants were 28,780 adolescent student athletes from Maine who completed baseline preseason testing with ImPACT® between 2009 and 2013. They had no history of concussion in the past 6 months. Results:Athletes with a migraine histo…

CONCLUSIONS PCS is commonly associated with multiple concussions, but 23.1% in the present series occurred after only 1 concussion. Most patients with PCS had multiple symptoms persisting for months or years. The median duration of PCS was 7 months, with a range up to 26 years. In only 11.3%, the PCS had ended at the time of consultation. Not all predictors commonly cited in the literature align with the findings in this study. This is likely due to differences in the definitions of PCS used in research. These results suggest that the use of ICD-10 and DSM-IV to diagnose PCS may be biased toward those who are vulnerable to…

Since its third iteration in 2008, the international Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) has delineated several “modifying factors” that have the potential to influence the management of sport-related concussions (SRC). One of these factors is co- and pre-morbidities, which includes migraines, mental health disorders, ADHD, learning disability, and sleep disorders. Mental health disorders and in particular, depression, have received some attention in the management of SRC and in this review we summarize the empirical evidence for its inclusion as a modifyin…
